How was your Thursday?
Former Ontario Junior Hockey League star Jake Evans had a pretty epic one.
A surprise call-up from the American Hockey League (AHL), the one-time St. Michael’s Buzzer had a pair of shots (including a breakaway), hits and shot blocks in an overtime victory – while making his National Hockey League (NHL) debut with the Montreal Canadiens.
All with his parents and brother looking on in the Bell Centre.
His OJHL days?
Evans, a former Buzzers captain, played 104 games during two-plus seasons at St. Mike’s, scoring 30 goals and adding 81 assists. He earned a scholarship to Notre Dame where he starred and was named captain again, leading the NCAA in scoring at one point and being nominated for the Hobey Baker Award in 2018.
The Toronto native was selected in the seventh round (207th overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the Canadiens.
A finalist for the Canadian Junior Hockey League Rookie of the Year award in 2012-13, Evans played two years for Team Canada East at the World Jr. A Challenge and was a first team OJHL all-prospect selection.
