The Exeter Hawks attempted to take Dorchester down a peg on Oct. 24, but the Dolphins refused to fall.
The top three spots in the SOJHL standings remain a tight struggle between Dorchester, Exeter and Aylmer. The Hawks had their chance to give Dorchester another loss on the weekend, but Exeter ended up losing 11-2.
The Hawks were not in their best shape going into the game. According to coach Dale Timmermans, two Hawks couldn’t play because of suspensions, and four more players were absent because of personal obligations.
The first period was fine for Exeter, but the team’s depleted numbers made them tired as the game progressed.
“We were really short of players. They just wore us down,” Timmermans said. “It was just one of those nights.”
Tyler Coleman scored for Exeter in the first, on an assist by Devon Steckle. Chase Thornton scored Exeter’s only other goal part way through the second, assisted by Jake Alkins.
Timmermans expects most of his absent players will be back this week, with a full roster the following week. The Hawks may have an easy start to this weekend, as they will be playing at home Friday against North Middlesex, which is currently one of the bottom teams in the league standings.
Dorchester stands at the top of the league with 12 wins so far. The Dolphins’ only loss this season was to Exeter in September. The Hawks are close behind with 11 wins.
The Lucan Irish lost 5-1 to Mt. Brydges on Oct. 23. The Bulldogs hounded the Irish in the first and second, until Irish player Ian Vandenheuvel managed the team’s only goal of the night in the third, assisted by Jamie Brzozowski.
The following day, the Irish took on the Port Stanley Sailors in a relentless game that ended in a 6-6 tie after two overtime periods.
