Stayner uses big second period to beat Fergus, 8-0

The Stayner Siskins scored five goals in the second period to pull away from the Fergus Devils and clinch an 8-0 win.

Stayner got the win on the strength of a great game by Ricky Darrell, who had two goals and two assists. Darrell scored the first of his two goals at 13:09 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Stayner. Quinten Bruce picked up the assist. Darrell's next tally made the score 4-0 Stayner with 19:04 left in the second period. Lucas Jeffery provided the assist.

Nick Keleher frustrated Fergus' offense all game, and stopped 27 shots en route to a shutout. Keleher managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 1.5 prior to the game.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 15:35 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Siskins racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and one major for 37 minutes in penalty time. Stayner surpassed its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game. The Siskins forced the Devils' goaltenders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, ripping 39 shots and forcing 31 saves. Alex Elliott made 20 stops and Braydon Evans made 11. Stayner excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. The Siskins surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Stayner has scored at the pace of 4.6 goals per game during the current campaign.

Stayner additionally got points from Jamieson Buck, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Jeffery, who also had one goal and three assists, and Bruce, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. Others who scored for Stayner included Griffin Pearce, Kyle Lafreniere, Ben Lougheed, and Brandon Watson, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Stayner were Brett Gauthier, who had two and Ryan Hudson and Sean Healy, who contributed one each.

Fergus was often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and one major for 51 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 24.0 minutes per game the Devils had been spending in the box. Fergus could not produce up to its normal offensive output. The Devils average 3.4 goals per game.

The Siskins registered one goal on 10 power play opportunities. For Stayner, Kort Weir was ejected from the game. For Fergus, Brock Philips and Dominic Wealthall were ejected from the contest.
