It’s super Saturday in the 2019-20 Ontario Junior Hockey League. On the second-last day of the regular season, more playoff questions will be answered.
NORTH DIVISION
There will be a crossover, play-in game in the North for the second straight year.
The fourth-place MARKHAM ROYALS will host the game Monday or Tuesday.
The Royals’ opponent will be the fifth-place team in the West, either the BRANTFORD 99ERS or GEORGETOWN RAIDERS. They each have 57 points to Markham’s 54 – necessitating the play-in game.
Georgetown hosts Oakville and Brantford visits Mississauga on Saturday. If they’re still tied after today, they’ll play Sunday night in Brantford to determine who plays Markham.
More drama? The STOUFFVILLE SPIRIT and COLLINGWOOD COLTS meet Saturday in the final OJHL on CHCH-TV Game of the Week at 3 p.m. Stouffville needs a win to claim second place and home ice in the first round of the playoffs. For Collingwood, a tie or win works.
WEST DIVISION
The regular season champion OAKVILLE BLADES will get the fourth-place finisher, Brantford or Georgetown, in Round 1.
The second-place BURLINGTON COUGARS and third-place BUFFALO JUNIOR SABRES are locked into their first-round best-of-seven series.
SOUTH DIVISION
Everything is set for the postseason – in repeats of last year’s opening round. The TORONTO JUNIOR CANADIENS, first place finishers, will face the rebuilding defending champion NORTH YORK RANGERS who have claimed fourth place.
The other series has the second place TORONTO PATRIOTS playing the red-hot St. MICHAEL'S BUZZERS. Again.
EAST DIVISION
All set here, as well.
The WELLINGTON DUKES won the regular season title by defeating the TRENTON GOLDEN HAWKS Friday in Trenton.
In the first round, Wellington plays the fourth-place COBOURG COUGARS. The WHITBY FURY, who grabbed third place with a win over Brampton on Friday, get Trenton.
The two games Sunday – Oakville in Milton and Buffalo in Brampton – will have no effect on the standings.
The first-round will be completed between Feb. 26 and March 10.
