OJHL GRADS SWEEP NCHA WEEKLY HONOURS
A pair of Ontario Junior Hockey League grads won player-of-the-week honours in their NCAA Division III conference.
Adrian College junior Rex Moe (Grand Rapids, Mich.) is the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Men’s Offensive Player of the Week and senior teammate Cameron Gray (Austin, Texas) is the NCHA Men’s Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Adrian College is located in Adrian, Mich.
Moe, who played for the Trenton Golden Hawks from 2016-18, earned the NCHA Offensive Player of the Week honor after coming up with back-to-back game-winning goals in the weekend series against MSOE to open the Bulldogs' title defense. He scored the first goal of the game Friday for all the offense Adrian would need in the 6-0 shutout.
He then netted the go-ahead goal for a 2-1 advantage with 29 seconds remaining in regulation in spectacular fashion Saturday. As he was cross-checked down to the ice between the face-off circles, he scored when he redirected a shot from the point that was going wide. He leads Adrian with eight goals and 13 points on the season.
Gray, who played goal for the Toronto Patriots in 2016-17, was excellent in the two games against the Raiders on the road to pick up the NCHA Defensive Player of the Week award. He stopped all 22 shots he faced to record his second shutout in a row for 6-0 win Friday.
On Saturday, he made 27 of 28 saves to hold the Raiders at bay in 2-1 victory. Gray, who spent two seasons at NCAA Division 1 St. Lawrence, did see his personal-record scoreless streak of 132:50--spanning four games--snapped with the goal.
The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association has 11 men’s teams in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
