December 16, 2022, Mississauga, ON – The OJHL announced today the details of the first ever OJHL Skills Competition that will be staged during the 2022-23 Ontario Junior Hockey League All-Star Celebration presented by Dairy Farmers of Ontario.
The weekend event is scheduled for January 13 and 14, 2023 in scenic Collingwood, Ont.
The OJHL’s inaugural Skills Competition will be held Friday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m., following the OJHL vs Collingwood Blues Alumni Game. Teams from the South-East and North-West conferences will square off for league skills bragging rights.
The Skills Competition events will consist of the Hardest Shot, Accuracy Shooting, Fastest Skater, a Speed-Skate Relay and an 18-player Showdown. Points will be awarded for each event to determine which conference’s team reigns supreme in the 2023 OJHL Skills Competition.
In addition, awards will be presented for top individual performances in player categories consisting of Hardest Shot, Most Accurate Shot, Fastest Skater and Top Goalie. Each winner will receive an award, bragging rights and a gift from Dairy Farmers of Ontario.
The Skills Competition will be managed by Top Shot Hockey. The Ontario company operates skills challenges for Junior A, professional and minor hockey leagues. The company, which runs the ECHL all-star skills event, designed and produced the electronic targets used in the accuracy challenge by the NHL in Tampa and San Jose. This year, in addition to the OJHL, Top Shot will manage every professional league’s All Star Skills Competitions.
The All-Star Celebration centrepiece is the OJHL All-star Game set for Saturday, Jan. 14, at 3 p.m. It will be televised nationally on CHCH, as part of the league’s Game of the Week schedule of games. The game will feature the best players from across the 21-team OJHL as selected by the league’s competition committee.
At 7:30 p.m. the OJHL’s top prospects will clash in the InStat Top Prospects game featuring the OJHL’s top young talent from both OJHL conferences in 2022-23.
All net proceeds from the weekend events will go to the OJHL Foundation, which focuses on delivering the First Assist Program to aid players with mental health and life skills training.
