HAWKS DEFEAT DUKES IN THE BATTLE OF QUINTE
The Golden Hawks took the trip down Highway 33 on Friday night to visit the Wellington Dukes for another installment of the Battle of Quinte. The Golden Hawks were playing their second game in two nights, having defeated the Cobourg Cougars 9-1 the on Thursday night in Cobourg.
The Dukes would open the scoring in the first, making it 1-0 five-minutes into the first period. However, the Golden Hawks would respond quickly as Sullivan Sparkes (Waterloo, ON) tied things up, tipping in a point shot from Kyle Robinson (Rocky Harbour, NL) to square things up at one. The Golden Hawks wouldn't stop there as Dalton Bancroft (Madoc, ON) would bang in a loose puck to give the G-Hawks the lead. Matt Nastasiuk (Barrie, ON) would pick up his 5th point of the weekend, with Griffen Fox (Brantford, ON) getting an assist on the play as well.
The Golden Hawks took control during the 2nd period, outshooting the Dukes 24-6 in the middle frame. Their persistence would be rewarded as with just 6-seconds left Griffen Fox would give the Golden Hawks some breathing room, putting the G-Hawks up 3-1. Sullivan Sparkes and Cameron Gaylor (Toronto, ON) would assist on the late insurance marker.
The Golden Hawks would put on a gutsy defensive effort in the third to preserve the lead as the Dukes pressed. The G-Hawks wouldn't break though and after a great shot block by Wyatt George (Pittsburgh, PA), George would be rewarded as Julien Jacob (Courtice, ON) set him up for the empty-netter to seal this one for the Hawks.
Anand Oberoi (Kanata, ON) made a number of incredible saves, including a kick-save in the second period when the Dukes were pressing for the equalizer. He made 27 saves on 28 shots in the winning effort.
