HAWKS TAKE GAME 1 IN BEST OF 7 SERIES
Playoff hockey returned to Trenton last night, as the Golden Hawks opened up our Best of 7 Series vs the Whitby Fury on Friday night in The Hangar. The Golden Hawks finished 2nd in the East Division and T-2nd in the OJHL, with Whitby finishing 3rd in the East.
Whitby would strike first as Trenton, ON native Michael Andrews scored to give the Fury the lead after just 2 minutes and 44 seconds. They would strike again quickly, adding a second goal before the three-minute mark of the first period. The Golden Hawks responded to the disappointing start and gave the Fury everything they could handle, with Dalton Bancroft (Madoc, ON) getting the Golden Hawks on the board before the halfway point of the first. Matt Nastasiuk (Barrie, ON) would tie things up before the end of the period, with Griffen Fox (Brantford, ON) and Dalton Bancroft picking up the assists on the tieing goal.
The second period would start better for the G-Hawks as Andrew Suriyuth (Kingston, ON) would give the Golden Hawks the lead in the first half of the period. Adam Kim (Kingston, ON) and Julien Jacob (Courtice, ON) picked up assists on the go-ahead goal. Adam Kim would get a goal of his own on the powerplay a few minutes later to extend the lead to 4-2. Whitby would get one back before the end of the second, but the Golden Hawks would go into the third up 4-3.
The Fury would tie things up early in the 3rd, and hold off a relentless Golden Hawks attack to force overtime. 10-Minutes into the first overtime Andrew Suriyuth would be the hero, with Adam Kim and Sullivan Sparkes (Waterloo, ON) providing the assists on the game-winning goal, which puts the G-Hawks ahead in the series 1-0.
Anand Oberoi (Kanata, ON) backstopped the Golden Hawks making 27 saves on 31 shots in the Game 1 victory. Game 2 is set for Sunday afternoon in Whitby, with the Series returning to Trenton on Tuesday.
