Ottawa, ON - The Ottawa Jr. Senators Hockey Club is pleased to announce that defenseman Geoffrey Lawson has verbally committed to Robert Morris University for the 2017-18 season.

"As an organization, we cannot be more happy for Geoffrey. Although he is only 18 years old, this is already his third season in the CCHL, and he has become one of the league's top defensive defenseman, said head coach & general manager Martin Dagenais. What people don't know about Geoffrey is that he is also an exceptional young man. His leadership skills are undeniable."

The 18 year old from Metcalfe, Ontario came to the Senators two years ago from the Minor Midget Upper Canada Cyclones. In six games this season, Lawson has registered a goal, and three assists for a total of four points, logging a ton of minutes, especially on the penalty kill where he excels.

"First and foremost I would like to thank my family for always being there to support me through the ups and downs of my hockey career, said Lawson. Next, I would like to thank all of my minor hockey coaches who volunteered their time to develop me as a hockey player and a person. I would also like to thank my current coaches for believing in my hockey abilities through my Junior career. I would like to thank Coach Schooley and the coaching staff of Robert Morris University for helping fulfill my lifelong dream of playing Division 1 hockey. I appreciate all the support Mike Pilon and Cecilia Branch have given me over the years. Lastly, I would like to thank my teachers from Osgoode Township High School for preparing me academically."

The Robert Morris University Colonials had an impressive record of 24-8-5 in 37 games last season. Their head coach is Derek Schooley, and they play in the Atlantic Hockey Association.

"I believe Robert Morris is a good fit for me both academically and athletically, mentioned Lawson. When I went down on a visit this past summer, I really liked all aspects of the school. Coming from a suburb of Ottawa, I feel as if Moon Township is a place I could call home. The green space around the campus and being close to the big city of Pittsburgh makes for the best of both worlds. Academically, I will be able to obtain an undergraduate degree that will start me on my way to becoming a chiropractor. On the hockey side of things, I am happy to become a part of a hockey program that has been so successful and continues to trend in a positive way."

Next season, overage defenseman Sean Rappleyea will be leaving the Senators to play at a higher level, which means Lawson will become the go-to-guy on Ottawa's blue line. Although Lawson is ready for the challenge, he knows he still has a few things to work on in order to become the hockey player he wants to be.

"Making the transition to the next level of hockey will require lots of hard work both on and off the ice for the next two years and well beyond that. I hope to increase my speed, agility and all mental aspects of my game. I am looking forward to the challenge and becoming a Colonial."
