Recap: Trappers 14, Moo 10
Another 24 runs crossed home on Sunday, but this time, the Trappers were on the winning end of a 14-10 decision.
In the first inning, starter Kyle Nordby gave up an early run on an RBI single by Luke White. Nordby would retire the next hitter, but with two outs, third baseman Pete Carlson parked a grand slam to left to pad the Fremont advantage to 5-0.
However, the Trappers responded in a big way in the bottom of the frame.
Michael Herrera started off the game with a leadoff single, and after a strikeout and a walk that followed, Max Modeste singled home a run to get Pierre on the board at 5-1. Following the single, starter J.D. Mays for Fremont hit three consecutive Trapper batters, which helped to score two runs and allow Tyler Ranel to single home another Trapper run to tie the score.
Then, Herrera singled again, the second time in the inning, and Pierre forged ahead for good at 7-5.
Things stayed at 7-5 until the bottom of the fourth, when the second baseman Nick Altermatt, hitting well above .300, uncorked a two run homer to double Pierre's advantage, 9-5. Altermatt wasn't done, however.
The Moo fought back in the fifth with three runs, two coming courtesy of a triple by former Trapper Jack Simonsen. Simonsen would later score to cut the lead to 9-8, making things dicey in the middle of the game.
But, in the bottom of the 6th, Pierre rallied in the bottom of the inning. Herrera walked, and the Alex Gonzales, the Cell Saver Player of the Game, unleashed a two run bomb, his first of the 2019 season, and Pierre retook a three run lead at 11-8. Altermatt made it 12-8 with another solo shot on the very next pitch, his second of the contest.
Fremont, in the seventh, got a solo homer from Luke White, who was 3-4, to make it 12-9. Another run would follow, and Fremont stayed the course to make it 12-10.
However, Pierre added insurance in the bottom of the eighth, when Gonzales doubled, and Altermatt then singled home both Herrera and Gonzales, extending the Trappers lead to 14-10 and making the deficit insurmountable for Fremont. The Trappers swept the series with the Moo, their first sweep of the season.
