Wheeling Catholic beats South Park 6-5 as Wensel gets hat trick
Kyle Wensel netted a hat trick to lead Wheeling Catholic over South Park, 6-5.
Wensel notched his first tally 11:37 into the first period. He then added goals at 13:59 into the first and at 11:32 into the third.Wheeling Catholic pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 18 penalty minutes.
Wheeling Catholic's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.
Kyle Newmeyer also scored for Wheeling Catholic. In addition, Wheeling Catholic received assists from Christopher Furka, who had four and Ryan Gossett and Chase Kelly, who contributed one each.
South Park stifled Wheeling Catholic's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. South Park could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 16 minutes in penalties during the game.
South Park was helped by Hunter Lanetz, who grabbed two goals. Lanetz scored the first of his two goals at 1:07 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Ethan Yaworski provided the assist. Lanetz's next tally made the score 5-4 South Park with 11:12 left in the second period. South Park earned a power play opportunity when Derek Dearth was put in the box for roughing. Ryan Sikora assisted on the tally. South Park also got a goal from Jakob Hickey as well. More assists for South Park came via Justin Hickey, who had one.
Jacob Laurine made 25 saves for Wheeling Catholic on 30 shots. Wheeling Catholic registered zero goals on six power play opportunities. South Park's Shane Walker stopped 20 shots out of the 26 that he faced. South Park registered one goal on seven power play opportunities.
