QATAR WINTER SPORTS FEDERATION

DECEMBER 2014

LEARN TO PLAY PROGRAM

According to our Player Development Strategy  we divided our Juniors in skill wise groups, as recruits practice together skating basic skills and better skaters, ages between 7 - 12 with full gear practice together basic skating, puck control, passing and shooting. At the moment, the Junior Advanced group increased, having 24 skaters and 2 goalies.

  • Upon the model we started to work with, the recruit group will be fed with new comers from the Recruitment Program.

  • Skaters coming from this group will jump in the advanced group according to their evaluations and receive gear from the IIHF storage.

  • Players from the Junior group which are overage (14 – 15 years) together with lower level players from the National Team can play as a team in QIHL Division C and the best ones can be recruited to the first team.

Nico Kivilahti is assigned to work with 2 LTP coaches with the Junior Group, as Jonathan Galang with 1 LTP coach work together with the Recruits. LTP coaches will rotate and have the chance to work at different levels and be mentored by both National Team Coaches (see the list bellow).

As our Junior Team start to work more consistent, we continued the Learn to Play Program with a 3 days Camp – first ever organized in Qatar for  Junior Team (27 – 29 December 2014).

20 players were invited at the camp which was organized at the Marriott Hotel Doha and included 2 on ice practices, 1 off ice and 1 classroom session daily.

During the classroom sessions main topics which have been pointed put were:

  • Ice hockey player behaivior towards team discipline (rink, hotel, restaurant, social events).

  • Fair Play and respect to the team mates, team staff and officials.

  • Importance of Off Ice warm up and off ice practice

All three National Team Coaches participated and also 3 LTP coaches (Thamer Al Mohannadi, Saad Al Moslamani and Nayuf Al Rumaihi), with Team Manager Noora Al Marrin.

Parents were invited for a meeting before the camp started. It was a good oppporuntity for them to ask questions and get answers from the coaching staff and the General Secretary Mr. Adel Al Mutlaq regarding ice hockey and the children development.

During the day there have been organized team building activities by the pool, where kids start to know better eachother and have fun together.

The camp was a great success, as players responded well and practices were organized and efficient.

As we shall move soon in the New Arena, we expect to have more ice time to run the Learn to Play Progam for the juniors and be more efficient with the Recruitment Program.
