In hockey, there is no room for hesitation or uncertainty in a game that requires lightning fast reflexes and split-second decisions. In no other area is this more apparent than in the penalty kill.
Here are some tips to help you during this crucial time:
Do Your Best to Win the Faceoff
With the most important first step being to gain control of the puck, this step is crucial. Make sure you put your best center into the game at this point to maximize your chances of winning.
Put in Your Best Defensemen
These need to be the players who have the best ability to shoot the puck down the ice in a critical situation. They need to be skilled at icing the puck, and able to use the slow ice to their advantage if those conditions are present.
Shoot the Puck Into a Corner
Instruct your team to get the puck into a corner as soon as possible so that you can have the best chance of defending it during a five on three. Like the Spartans at Thermopylae, the key to victory when you are outmanned is to squeeze your opponent through a tight opening to reduce the effect of their numbers.
Take a Breather
Allow your players to conserve their energy after the puck has been sent down the rink. They will need it later when the opposing team responds.
Control the Center of the Ice
When the puck makes its way back to your end, make however many players you have move to the center to divert the puck towards the boards. This will make it more difficult for the opponent to score.
If you follow these tips you will have a successful defense of the goal during any penalty kill that might come your way.
