Dragons Name 2023 Head Coach

<Alton, IL> The Alton River Dragons have hired Richard "Scotty" Scott as head coach, announced today by General Manager Dallas Martz.

Scott was a four-year starter at the University of Hawaii. He started and hit leadoff in all 50 games as a freshman, the only Rainbow Warrior to start all 50 games. Lead the team in At Bats, Hits, Runs, Triples, Walks, Hit By Pitches, and Stolen Bases. He was named Big-West conference Freshman Field Player of the Year and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Freshman All-American. Batted a career-best .321 during his Sophomore campaign and led the team in Runs, Hit By Pitches, and Stolen bases before the COVID pandemic cut the season short. Scott underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2020. He led the team in Runs, Hit by Pitches, and SAC Hits in his junior season. Scott entered the transfer portal after his 2021 Junior season and then returned to the University of Hawaii upon the hiring of new Head Coach Rich Hill despite offers from "Power 5" schools. Scott was named team captain as a senior and started his senior season, batting safely in the first 13 at bats of the season. He suffered a broken hand in Game three of the year however remained an everyday starter until tearing his elbow on April 1st at UCSB. Scott returned to play as a pinch hitter on April 19th at Fresno State with a 2 RBI single. Scott finished the season with a sizeable orthopedic brace and underwent reconstructive surgery in June 2022. Scott gave up his last year of eligibility to begin his coaching career. 

 

Coaching career- Started coaching with Pono Hawaii, a premier amateur travel baseball club based in Honolulu, Hawaii. Named Assistant Director of Coaching, responsibilities included working with the infielders, outfielders, base running, and hitters and managing teams. He coached underneath former Hawaii Coach Jerry Kleman. Also assisted Pono Hawaii players in the college recruiting process. Mentored numerous future and current college commits and baseball players. Started at Cuesta College in Fall 2022 as an Assistant Coach to Head Coach Bob Miller. Primary responsibilities include working with the outfielders and coaching the bases while assisting with the middle infielders, base running, offensive strategy, and hitting. 

 

Personal - Born in Houston, Texas. Raised in Cypress, Tx. Legal name Richard Scott IV, nicknamed "Scotty. Graduated from Cypress Ranch High School. Played baseball, football and ran track at Cy Ranch. Mother Tasha Scott, Father Richard Scott III. Has two younger sisters. Tyler plays softball at D1 Praire View A&M University. Father Richard played baseball at West Texas A&M and Texas Wesleyan.
