Army Remains Unbeaten, Siena downs Montclair, Marist Takes Game 1 of the I87 Cup
Last weekend featured a lot of key games around the SECHL which included game 1 of a rivalry series, the first matchup of the top 2 teams from last season, and a few other non league matchups that did not disappoint.
On Friday Marist and Siena squared off in a designated nonleague matchup to play game 1 of their 3 game rivalry series, the I 87 Cup. Marist took the lead late in the 1st period on a Rich Williams tally just about three minutes left on their first power play. This was followed by a pair of Sean Bruno power play goals to go up 3-0 before the Foxes added a late goal from Alex Amada to head into the locker room up 4-0 after 40 minutes of play. Chris Schulman would break the ice with an even strength goal early in the third which was followed by a TJ Pierce power play goal to cut the deficit to two. Marist would add another power play goal from Rich Williams to cap the evening with a 5-2 victory,
The following night, Siena would travel to Montclair in another wild game. Siena opened the scoring early on a Daalton Demarsh power play goal to take a 1-0 lead in the game. The Red Hawks would tie the game on Mike Sadowski's second goal of the season, which was a short-lived celebration as the Saint's Braden King would strike 3 seconds later on a power play goal to take a 2-1 lead. Montclair's Will Neal would tie the game at two around the 13 minute mark of the second, only to have that lead fade away again as Siena's Tim Robinson would score just two minutes later to take a 3-2 lead into the locker room after two periods. This set up what would be a wild period for both teams. A total of 6 goals were scored in a span of 6 minutes after Siena took a 4-2 lead on a Scott Banker goal at 6:39 into the third period. Nine seconds later, Montclair would get a goal from Anthony Oliveri and another 33 seconds later from Will Neal to tie the game at 4. Just 1 minute and 14 seconds later, the Saints Nate Scarancio would take the lead back on another power play goal only to have that lead disappear when Braden Ryan would score just over a minute later. The Red Hawks, taking another penalty after they had just tied the game, would see Nate Scarancio score again on the power play to take a 6-5 lead just thirty six seconds after Montclair tied the game for the third time. Siena would add an empty net goal late to seal a wild 7-5 victory.
Montclair State also took on Army last weekend, as the Black Knights looked to remain perfect on the season and in SECHL play. The Red Hawks would hang in for 40 minutes as the game was tied 2-2 after 2 periods. However Army would score three in the third period including a power play and shorthanded goal from Charlie Aronov to take the game 5-2 in a very tightly contested matchup.
Army would also square off in another tight game against SECHL opponent Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart would jump out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Tom Franzosa. Later in the 1st period Army would tie the game when James Delia found the back of the net. In the second period, bodies were flying as both teams combined for 16 minutes in penalties and the teams exchanged goals to make it 2-2 after 2. Aronov would score a power play goal in the third which was followed by a late empty net goal by Delia to seal the victory for Army and remain undefeated in both league and regular season play.
Sacred Heart also battled independent RPI to a closely contested game where they fell by a score of 5-4.
Elsewhere: Marist fell to Conn College 7-4 and the results of the Sacred Heart and Merrimack game has yet to be made official.
