Sacred Heart Earns Wins against 1st Place Army and Siena to Slide Up the SECHL Standings
Up until last weekend, the Sacred Heart Pioneers had quietly only played two games in league play. Sitting at 1-1-0, the Pioneers only loss came against top ranked Army. The Pioneers earned two more league wins with an overtime win against Army and another win against Siena. In Sacred Heart's overtime win against the Black Knights, they found themselves 4-1 after the opening period. The teams exchanged goals in the second making the score 5-2 in favor of the Pioneers after 40 minutes of play. Army would score three goals in the third period to force overtime. Sacred Heart's Dylan Stiles would score the overtime winner to hand Army their first loss of the season.
The Pioneers were able to follow up that win with another SECHL victory against Siena and a non league winner against highly touted NECHA opponent, St. Anslems. Sacred Heart will face Umass Amherst this weekend before hosting Clarkson for a two game set at home in two weekends.
Elsewhere in the league last weekend, Army topped RPI twice outscoring the Engineers 12-5 in the two game set while Marist fell to Merrimack 6-3. Both Clarkson and Montclair St. had the weekend off.
Coming up this weekend Montclair St. will travel to Siena on Saturday and the Saints will travel to Marist for game two of their 87 Cup series against the Red Foxes on Sunday. In non-league play, as mentioned, Sacred Heart will play Umass Amherst and Clarkson will play two non league games against UConn and Bentley, Marist will also take on RPI on Friday evening in a non league matchup.
