Bears Cannot Hold Lead, Pembroke Wins 6-4
The Smiths Falls Bears & Pembroke Lumber Kings have faced each other 3 times this season. The road team has won all 3 games & the winning team has scored 6 goals in all the victories.
The game started out on a positive note as the Bears raced out to a 4-1 lead in the 1st period. The game was the Bears annual Teddy Bear Toss event. The fans were encouraged to bring or purchase a teddy bear & throw it on the ice after the 1st Bears goal. The players then collect all the gifts for the Salvation Army to give to those in need during the holiday season. The wait did not take long as Bears veteran defenceman Chris MacMillan scored his 2nd goal of the year on the powerplay at the 2:27 mark of the opening period. The powerplay goal brought teddy bears of all shapes & sizes to the Bears Den ice surface. Taylor Henry & Nick Coates collected the assists on the "Teddy Bear" goal. The Bears increased their lead to 2-0 when Neil Doef scored his 15th goal at the 5:07 mark on assists from Kevin Groulx & Cole Busschaert. Pembroke's Felix Chamberland scored at 14:28 to cut the lead to 2-1 before the Bears scored twice on a 4 minute Pembroke penalty. Doef's 2nd of the game & 16th of the season put the Bears ahead 3-1 at the 18:36 mark. Jared Henry & Kevin Groulx garnered the helpers. Groulx scored his 16th goal just 31 seconds later to put the Bears up 4-1 after 20 minutes of play. Doef & Busschaert set up the Bears 4th goal. The Bears outshot the Lumber Kings 17-9 in the period. The 4 goals chased Joel Horodziejczyk from the Pembroke net to start the 2nd period.
After prospering from 2 powerplay goals in the 1st period, the Bears started the 2nd period by giving up 2 Pembroke powerplay goals in the 1st 6:55 of the middle stanza. The powerplay goals put Pembroke back in the game & the Bears back on their heels. Pembroke did not let up and scored twice more courtesy of Chamberland to finish off his hat trick. The 4th Pembroke goal of the period at the 13:30 mark put the Lumber Kings up 5-4 and brought in Cole Skinner to replace starter Michael Pinios. Pembroke outshot the Bears 14-11.
After two crazy periods the 3rd settled down as both teams were awarded many powerplay opportunities but only the Lumber Kings were able to cash in as they scored at 13:21 while on a 5 on 3 man advantage.The Bears outshot the Lumber Kings 9-8 in the final 20 minutes.
Pembroke was 3 for 6 on the powerplay while the Bears were 3 for 8 with the man advantage.
