Colts Hand Bears A 4-1 Loss in Cornwall
The Bears got off to a great start and were perhaps thinking their scoring struggles were behind them when they scored just 17 seconds into their game Thursday night against the Cornwall Colts. Little did they know that would be their only goal of the night as they lost their 6th straight game, this time 4-1 to the Colts.
Cole Busschaert (Kingston ON) opened the scoring just 17 seconds into the 1st period as he picked off an errant clearing pass in the Colts zone and beat Liam Lascelle for his team leading 19th goal of the year and 42 point. Each team recorded 9 shots on goal as Smiths Falls took 3 of the 5 minor penalties handed out.
The Colts's Jeremy MacFarlane scored a powerplay goal at 1:52 of the 2nd period to knot the game at 1-1. Although the period would end up tied, each team had several good scoring chances but the Colts Lascelle and the Bears Bo Taylor (Stittsville ON) were equal to the task. The Bears took the only penalty in the 2nd period and the Colts enjoyed a 15-12 shot advantage.
Tristan Conrad kncked down a cross ice pass in the neutral zone and raced in to beat Taylor while Smiths Falls was on a powerplay to put the Colts ahead 2-1, 9:42 into the 3rd period. The Bears took a 5 minute major for high sticking at 11:11 to put themselves in a tough position. The penalty kill looked like it was going to succeed in killing off the major until Konnor MacCormick scored at 15:11 to put the Colts up 3-1. The Bears pulled Taylor in the waning minutes in an attempt to draw closer on the scoreboard. The gamble did not work as Brennan Markell chipped a puck down the ice and scored into the empty net for the final 4-1 score with just 15 seconds left in the 3rd period. Cornwall outshot the Bears 13-5 in large part to the Bears 7 minutes in penalties. Cornwall took 2 minor penalties in the 3rd period.
