Men's Club Ice Hockey Drops A Loss To IUP

2/14/2019 Slippery Rock University vs Indiana University of Pennsylvania

 

Thursday night Slippery Rock University traveled to IUP for rivalry night hockey. 

 

Puck Drop was 7:10 p.m. at S&T Bank Arena. It was a slow start for Slippery Rock in the first period. Everything seemed to go wrong for the Rock as the puck kept bouncing off their stick right to IUP. M. Longhitano started off the scoring at 9:18 at for IUP. K.Harris added another goal at 13:38. The scoring barrage continued with a third goal at 14:45 by M. Longhitano. Indiana outshot Slippery Rock 12-8 in the first period.

After everything going wrong in the first period for Slippery Rock they continued to grind to get back in the game. Captain Tommy Kimmick scored the momentum changing at 0:29 in the period. The shots were more balanced in the period twelve to elven in favor of IUP.

Now onto the third period where the resilient SRU team has played their best hockey. During the season Slippery Rock has proven time and time again that hockey is a sixty-minute game starting out slow and grinding it out to the end. The switch was flipped in the third period with everything going right for Slippery Rock and everything wrong for IUP. IUP looked gassed and tired due to Slippery Rock wearing them down all game. C. Miller scored for SRU at 4:03. Tommy Kimmick scored the equalizer goal at 6:46.

After a clean game five penalties for ten penalty minutes, it was now time for some three on three five-minute overtime hockey. With some tense back and forth shots on goal that created some amazing saves for both goalies.  T. Kurtz of IUP even took a hard slap shot to the head that went right between bars on his mask. The game looked to be going to a shootout until IUP scored in the twelfth hour. Conroy rifled a shot from the blue line that ended up in the back of the net with 0.6 seconds left on the clock. A crushing defeat for Slippery Rock to their bitter rivals IUP.

Join us next week as The Rock makes their final push towards the playoffs with three games in three nights. First up Slippery Rock travels to John Carroll University for a 7: 10 p.m. puck drop. Then Slippery Rock has a home and home series with the University of Pittsburgh Friday and Saturday night.
