Josh Argier’s goal near the midway mark of the second period proved to be the difference as the Stouffville Spirit racked up their fifth straight win with a 3-2 decision over the Burlington Cougars in their Ontario Junior Hockey League Governors Cup contest in Buffalo Wednesday.

The Spirit took a 2-0 lead in the opening period on goals from Andrew Hughes and Thomas Tinmouth before Burlington scored on the power play to cut their deficit just before the intermission.

After Argier scored to restore the Spirit’s two-goal cushion, Burlington countered with an extra strength marker near the end of the period to get back to within a goal.
Both teams went scoreless in the final 20 minutes.

Spirit goaltender Aaron Taylor handled 39 of 41 shots while Stouffville directed 22 on Burlington’s goal.

Leading the North Division with a 6-1-0-1 mark, Stouffville will play the Markham Royals at Markham Centennial Arena Friday at 7:30 p.m.
