Spirit season ends in 4-2 loss to Trenton
The Stouffville Spirit’s 2016-17 season ended with a 4-2 loss to the Trenton Golden Hawks at the Stouffville Arena Thursday night.
Trenton swept their best-of-seven, second-round Ontario Junior Hockey League playoff series in four games.
On Thursday, Trenton scored three times in 51 seconds during the first period then made it 4-0 early in the third.
Josh Argier answered, scoring both Spirit goals, but that was as close as they would get.
The Spirit was outshot 33-27.
Attendance was 302.
Trenton is the 10th ranked team in Canada.
The Spirit, who eliminated the Markham Royals in the first round, was the lone York Region team to play in Round 2
The Cobourg Cougars lead the Wellington Dukes 3-1 in the other North-East semifinal.
In the South-West Conference, the Georgetown Raiders – second-ranked in the nation – advanced to the third round of the playoffs with a sweep of the Toronto Jr. Canadiens.
The Oakville Blades are up 3-1 on the Burlington in the other series.
The Dudley-Hewitt Cup Central Canadian championships will be played in Trenton from May 2 to 6.
Cobourg is home to this year’s RBC Cup national championships, May 13 to 21.
The host teams receive a berth in both tournaments.
The Spirit graduates five 20-year-old players: Aaron Taylor, Cam Lintner, Brad Yowart, Max Novick and Davis Kuksis.
