SPIRIT'S BURROWS ELECTED TO OHA BOARD OF DIRECTORS
CAMBRIDGE, Ont. - Stouffville Spirit Governor and General Manager Kenny Burrows was elected to the board of governors of the Ontario Hockey Association during the OHA's 132nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) June 19.
The 2021 OHA AGM was held virtually again this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The business portion of the meeting was run by Parliamentarian Jason Robinson and the meeting was opened by OHA Chair of the Board of Directors Rob Campbell who welcomed everyone and thanked for attending the AGM via Zoom Conferencing.
The AGM included representation from the governing body’s Board of Directors, League Representatives, Team Delegates and Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) member partners that were able to attend.
Ninety-four voting Team Delegates represented and seven OHA Board Members for a total of 101 voting delegates in attendance at the AGM.
OHA Chair Rob Campbell provided an overview of the highlights from the OHA and four Leagues (Ontario Junior Hockey League - OJHL, Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League - GOJHL, Provincial Junior Hockey League - PJHL, Allan Cup Hockey - ACH) that took place throughout the 2020-21 season.
Campbell included the successes of each League, the COVID-19 pandemic challenges, an update on the OHA Strategic Plan, and the progress the OHA made in 2020-21. Committee reports were also viewed/discussed by those in attendance and delegates voted on a number of Notices of Motion.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the OHA presented just one award in 2020-21 and that was the Gold Stick. 2020-21 Gold Stick recipient Bernie Shantz (New Hamburg Firebirds, PJHL) was recognized with a special video tribute during the AGM. The video tribute was voiced by Sirius XM and NHL Network host Steve Kouleas.
Shantz is a long-time hockey executive and member of the OHA hockey community. Shantz serves as Past-President of the PJHL’s New Hamburg Firebirds. The Gold Stick is an order of merit in hockey awarded by the OHA for outstanding service to the game other than as a player. Such outstanding service must have been for a period of not less than 10 years of continuous duration. Congratulations to Bernie Shantz of the New Hamburg Firebirds on being named the 2020-21 recipient of the OHA Gold Stick award.
