Logger Dog, the mascot for the La Crosse Loggers baseball team, paid a visit to Christ-St. John’s Lutheran School in West Salem last week to promote a reading incentive program sponsored by the team.
The Northwoods League mascot was accompanied by Ruth Kapanke, who owns the team with her husband, Dan. She explained that the reading program, which started last year, is divided into four segments of 250 minutes of reading time each.
Kids who reach “first base” by reading 250 minutes get a Loggers bookmark. Second base gets the reader a Loggers pencil, and third base gets a free play voucher for the Loggers Fun Zone at the park. Students who hit a home run by reading 1,000 minutes get a free ticket to a Loggers home game on June 2, with their parents getting half-price tickets.
