SBI Previews the Incoming College Park Freedom Outfielders
I’m often accused of being “blunt” or not thinking before I speak my mind.
In trying to summarize the 2013 season for the College Park Freedom (Florida Collegiate Summer League), there is no easy way to say it. College Park just wasn’t a very good team. They finished the season with a 10-28 record and were 17 games behind the first place Winter Park Diamond Dawgs. As a team, the Freedom hit just .228 and they scored just 107 runs. All in all, while last season might not have been a successful one, they have signed five outfielders that should really turn things around this summer.
As is the case with every summer team, the roster will fluctuate as we get closer to the start of the summer season.
Donato DiNorcia is a 6 foot, freshman from Le Moyne College in New York. He is a Naples, FL native and was a star at Seacrest County Day High School. Donato currently has a .272 average in 81 at-bats for the Dolphins. He has scored 13 runs, driven in 4 and he has hit 4 doubles as well this season. He has good speed (11 stolen bases) and he is a good defensive outfielder.
Dalton Duty is the next outfielder that has signed with the Freedom. He is a left hand hitting freshman and he currently attends Central Florida. He has made three starts this season and is a combined 1 for 9 this year. He hit 13 home runs during his high school career, so College Park will be counting on him to provide a power-hitting left handed bat.
Austin Hulsey is a junior from Alabama A&M. He is 6’3” and hails from Russellville, AL. Austin brings experience to the Freedom’s lineup and he is currently having a great season for the Bulldogs. He has a batting average of .351, with an OPS of .926 in 134 at-bats. He has scored 18 runs, knocked in 30 and he leads his team with 11 doubles. He has shown power at the plate this season to the tune of hitting 4 homers this year.
The fourth player on this list is Northern Kentucky’s Josh Myers. A junior from Portsmouth, OH, Josh is hitting .256, with a pair of doubles and one triple. He has also swiped two bases this season. Josh spent last summer with Okotoks of the Western Major Baseball League. He had a great summer and finished the season with a .331 average in 124 at-bats. He scored 27 runs, knocked in 13 and he stole 17 bases for the Dawgs. During the playoffs last summer, Josh hit .361, with six runs scored and one double.
Last but not least is Sinclair CC freshman Alex Young. He has really turned heads this year and is currently sporting a batting average of .380 in 92 at-bats. He has scored 27 runs and has driven in 24 runners this season. He has added four doubles, two triples and 17 stolen bases this season.
The Freedom open up their 2014 season on June 4th when they take on the Winter Garden Squeeze.
