Coastal Plain League Recap from June 18th
The Edenton Steamers are one of the best summer ball teams in the country right now and they pounded the Morehead City Marlins 12-6 last night. Chance Shepard (NC State) and Tony Rosselli (Indiana State) both hit home runs for the Steamers last night. Edenton’s Cole Gruber (Nebraska-Omaha) hit a triple and drove in three as well in the win. Stephen Wallace (Mount Olive) added a home run for the Marlins last night. Devan Watts (Tusculum) was the winning pitcher last night after throwing one scoreless inning in relief.
The Florence RedWolves offense was on display as they beat the High Point-Thomasville HiToms 14-5. Chris Adams (Florence--Lee) hit a lead-off homer and finished the night by going 4-for-6 with a home run and four runs batted in. South Carolina’s Matt Williams (Florence) went 2-for-2 with a double, four runs scored and three walks. Nathan Wierzgac (Florence--Lee) hit a pair of doubles and drove in four as well yesterday.
The Lexington County Blowfish defeated Forest City 9-1 yesterday. Lexington County’s J.D. Crowe (Francis Marion) and Danny Edgeworth (Mercer) both hit homers yesterday. Elliot Lance (Wofford) was the winning pitcher after throwing six-solid innings. Forest City’s Kyle Peals (Columbus State) took the loss, but only allowed one earned run in seven innings pitched.
The Gastonia Grizzlies sent their fans home happy last night after trouncing the Martinsville Mustangs 9-2. Gastonia’s Sammy Taormina (Liberty) went 3-for-5 and scored two run yesterday. Jeremy Howell (Kennesaw State) picked up three hits and drove in four in the win.
Sam Mersing (Pitt) and two other Holly Springs pitchers combined to allow just one hit in their win over the Wilson Tobs. Mersing picked up his first win of the season after allowing just a double in 6.1 innings pitched. He also fanned nine Tobs batters in his win. Collin Woody (UNC-Greensboro) hit his third homer of the season for the Salamanders.
The Peninsula Pilots upended the Petersburg Generals 5-3 yesterday. VMI’s Taylor Edens is now 4-0 this season after earning the win yesterday. Devin Hemmerich (Norfolk State) pitched the final two-innings and picked up his first save of the season. Luke Toms (Lee) hit his 9th double of the season for the Pilots. Petersburg’s GK Young (Coastal Carolina) hit his first homer of the season for the Generals.
