SwampBats Drop Both Ends of a Doubleheader to Vermont
The SwampBats (22-14) entered today's doubleheader against Vermont (19-17) winners of two in a row. The same was the case for the Mountaineers, however.
The first game was a continuation of Tuesday's postponement. Keene was trailing 5-0 just two innings into it, so there was a mountain to climb right off the bat. The SwampBats did score the first run after Omar Daniels (University of Dayton) crossed the plate off a single from Tommy Joseph (Jacksonville University) and an error from Vermont's shortstop. That 5-1 score would be as close as the SwampBats got.
In the bottom of the third (Vermont was the home team for the first game) the Mountaineers got a home run to make it 6-1. That remained the score until the sixth inning when another home run for Vermont made it 7-1.
The SwampBats couldn't string together anything at the plate, and Vermont continued to pour it on. The Mountaineers scored three more in the bottom of the seventh with two more home runs. That made it 10-1. The SwampBats scored one in the top of the ninth, but lost 10-2.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Keene dug itself an even larger hole right off the bat. Vermont jumped all over SwampBat starting pitcher Richie Dell, and opened up an 8-0 lead through the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, the SwampBats started to slowly crawl back into it after a Zach Bushling (University of Connecticut) solo home run made it 8-1.
In the SwampBats' next inning at the plate, they scored two more runs when Matt Almonte (Pace University) doubled and Ronny Medina (Florida Southwestern State) walked. Almonte left with an injury for pinch-runner Ethan Groff (Tulane University). Both he and Medina scored to make it 8-3 through five innings.
After another scoreless inning in the field, the SwampBats struck for three in the bottom of the sixth. Troy Schreffler (University of Maryland) singled and scored off a double from Groff to make it 8-4. The next batter was Drake Westcott (University of Louisville), who hit his first home run of the year to make it 8-6. The SwampBats would get the tying run to first base, but left him there, entering the seventh and final inning down by two.
Keene pitched another scoreless inning in the top of the 7th. In the bottom half of the inning, the first two guys to the plate each struck out. Schreffler then doubled to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Noah Martinez (Central Connecticut State University). He tapped a ball back to the pitcher, which was thrown on to first to get the final out of the game. The SwampBats lost both against Vermont, falling to 22-14.
