SwampBats Ride Bats to Win over Vermont
Keene NH,
The SwampBats thumped the Vermont Mountaineers 12-5 on Friday night at Alumni Field.
Stonehill’s Pete Haas, a Keene High School graduate, got the start in his first appearance of the summer for the SwampBats, and pitched a scoreless top of the first inning. Sam Drumheller (Florida Atlantic) worked out of a jam in the top of the second before the SwampBats exploded in the bottom half. Garrett Rice (Missouri Southern State) led off with a single and Jackson Owen (Mississippi State) followed with a two-run home run to center field. Evan Goforth (Indiana) reached on an error, and then there were back-to-back singles by Greg Bozzo (Northeastern) and Bryan Padilla (UConn). Ramses Cordova (Winthrop) grounded into a fielder’s choice and then stole second, as the throw went into center field allowing Bozzo to score. Tony Livermore (Northwestern) reached on an error allowing Cordova to score. Jordan Smith (George Mason) drew a walk, and then Devin Taylor (Indiana) drove in another run with a fielder’s choice to second base. With first and third and two out, Rice clobbered a three-run home run over the center field fence to complete an eight-run barrage for the SwampBats.
Now with an 8-0 lead, Drumheller pitched a scoreless third and fourth before running into trouble in the fifth. Vermont hit a two-run home run before a double, a walk, and another double chased him from the game with two outs. Vermont drew two more walks and a hit-by-pitch to make the score 8-5. Spencer Dessart (Middlebury) came in next and induced a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded to retire the side. Bozzo doubled in Taylor and Goforth to make it 10-5 in the bottom of the fifth. The next runs came in the bottom of the eighth when Blake DeLamielleure smashed his fifth home run of the season over the batter’s eye in center field and Smith followed with a triple, scoring on an error to make it 12-5. Dessart continued to dazzle out of the bullpen, pitching four and a third innings of scoreless relief, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out five for his first save of the season.
Keene (9-17) will look to stay hot at home against the Sanford Mainers Saturday evening.
