Mountaineers travel to Sanford, lose 9-4 against Mainers

SANFORD, ME – The Vermont Mountaineers were trounced by the Sanford Mainers 9-4 Friday night at Goodall Park. The win for the Mainers gives them three wins out of seven total games against the Mountaineers this year.

The Mainers wasted no time as they scored two runs in the first inning. Three of the first four batters reached base. The run scoring plays included an RBI groundout from Freddy Rojas Jr. and an RBI single by Shane Paradine. Through one inning of play, Sanford led Vermont 2-0.

The Mountaineers responded with three runs right away. Casey Mayes (Lansing, Mi./ Michigan State University) singled, Evan Giordano (Sewll, N.J./ Stony Brook University) reached base on a dropped third strike and Keagan Calero (Rochester, N.H./ University of Dayton) drew his twenty-sixth walk of the season. With two outs, Griffin Arnone (New Canaan, Conn./ Elon University) then lined a three-run double to left field to score all three baserunners. The Mountaineers led 3-2 through the first two innings of play.

In the next inning, the Mainers scored four runs on four hits to retake the lead. Cam Ridley led the inning off with a double. Later in the inning, Dom Freeburger singled to score Ridley from second. Paradine roped his second RBI single of the game and was followed by an RBI single by Danye Leonard. Through three innings of play, the Mainers led 6-3.

The Mountaineers responded again, however, this time in the top of the fourth inning. Giordano launched his fifth home run of the season to bring the Mountaineers to within one run. Mainers led 6-4 through three and a half innings. Cam Ridley excelled on the basepaths in the bottom of the fourth. After reaching base on a leadoff walk, he proceeded to steal second and third base and advanced to home plate on an errant throw. Mainers led 7-4 through four innings.

The Mainers scored two runs without the benefit of a hit in the fifth inning. Jonathan Barditch and Ubaldo Lopez each reached base via walk and each scored runs in the fifth. Mainers led 9-4 through six innings.

With the win, Sanford improved to 15-24. With the loss, the Mountaineers dropped to 21-19 on the season.

The Mountaineers will be at home on Saturday July 31st when they take on the North Shore Navigators at Montpelier Recreation Field. You can watch it online on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
