CATAMOUNTS HEAD INTO HALLOWEEN 6-1-1-1
Weekend Recap
The Catamounts sustained their first winless weekend of the season in the Battle of I-89 against Norwich University. On Friday, UVM was without captains Harrison Naylor and Connor Bradley, who were participating in a UVM event at Morgan Stanley's headquarters in New York City. The lack of senior leadership was evident as the Cats started slow and fell behind 2-0 entering the third period. While UVM rebounded to record 14 shots in the third, they were not able to find twine and Norwich potted an empty net goal to seal the outcome. The 3-0 setback to the Cadets was UVM's first regulation loss of the 2018-19 season.
With Naylor and Bradley back for Sunday's rematch, the Catamounts found renewed energy and put forward a much better effort. An early goal from Joey Konvit made it a 1-0 Vermont lead, but a bad turnover led to Norwich's tying goal soon after. Penalties on the same shift created a 5-on-3 opportunity for Norwich and they Cadets grabbed a 2-1 lead early in the second. UVM would find the equalizer when Konvit poked a rebound through the wickets to tie things up. Konvit's second tally would be the last of the day as UVM and Norwich skated to a 2-2 tie through overtime. UVM would leave the weekend with an 0-1-1 record and a 6-1-1-1 mark overall.
Season to Date
UVM is off to a fast start in 2018-19, currently maintaining the 14th best winning percentage in the Northeast Region and 7th best in NECHA. UVM's top line of Harrison Naylor (5-10-15), Jack Levinsky (5-7-12), and Joey Konvit (5-6-11) has proved to be among the most lethal in the ACHA, with all three tied at 5 goals apiece. On the back end, Connor Bradley and Cole Garabed have been horses on the powerplay. Bradley has dished out 8 assists through 8 games played and Garabed has ripped home a team-leading 4 PPG's. In net, sophomore Monty Cunningham is having an exceptional start to his first season as UVM's starter. Cunningham ranks 14th in S% among ACHA goaltenders with over 120 minutes played, as he maintains an astounding .944 mark.
UVM will not play games over Halloween Weekend in a quasi-bye week for the Catamounts. UVM will use this time to rest and recover. Sam Pitonyak and Isaac Cioffi, both injured in previous games, will practice this week with anticipated returns against Roger Williams and Bryant in two weeks.
Looking Ahead
UVM will return to NECHA action on Nov. 3 at Roger Williams University (6-1-0) and Nov. 4 at Bryant University (0-3-0-2). As we approach the midpoint of the 2018-19 season, the ACHA Div. II Northeast rankings will be released on Wednesday, Nov. 7, adding further gravity to the importance of UVM's Rhode Island road trip.
