Winless Weekend Drops UVM to #14
For the first time since mid-October, the University of Vermont Catamounts finished a weekend of games without a victory. After an 0-1-1 record against the unranked Boston University Terriers, UVM fell to #14 in the ACHA Div. II Northeast Region rankings.
Friday, Oct. 7 vs. Boston University
After a scoreless first period, UVM got out to a 2-0 lead in the second period on goals from Joey Konvit and Harrison Naylor. BU would tie things at two apiece early in the third period before Naylor gave UVM a 3-2 edge. A Ricky Cronin goal with 4:01 left in the third would secure a tie, as neither team could break through during the 4-on-4 overtime period. Dana Marsh stopped 30/33 in the decision.
Saturday, Oct. 8 vs. Boston University
UVM jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, as Joey Konvit waited out the BU goaltender after a great forecheck by Beck Heil. BU would score three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead and UVM elected to replace Marsh with freshman goaltender Eric Roy. After a goal from Naylor made it a 3-2 score, BU tallied to make it 4-2, which was followed by a Cole Garabed blast to cut the lead to one entering the third period. Joey Konvit would tie things at 4-4, but a Dylan Melanson one-timer with 2:49 left in the game gave BU a 5-4 victory. Eric Roy was strong in his collegiate debut, turning aside 15/17 Terrier shots.
Fall Semester Recap
Despite the sour finish, UVM has wrapped up one of their finest starts in program history. Currently maintaining a 10-3-2-1 record, the Catamounts are ranked #14 (out of 69 teams) in the ACHA Div. II Northeast.
One of the highlights of UVM's fall semester was excellent goaltending. Prior to an injury in warmups against UConn, sophomore Monty Cunningham had been putting up outstanding numbers as the Cats' starting goaltender. Since Cunningham's injury, Marsh, Roy, and Andrew Ehler have combined to give UVM a team save percentage of .919 and team goals against average of 2.63.
Another highlight has been UVM's dynamic first line. Comprised of Naylor, Konvit, and junior Jack Levinsky, the line has combined to score 43.1% of Vermont's total points on the season. Naylor, who maintains a 11-16-27 scoring line, is among the top point-getters in the entire Northeast Region. While this line's scoring prowess has been key to UVM's success, the Catamounts will look for more secondary scoring in the spring semester.
Spring Semester Preview
With the fall semester in the rearview mirror, the Catamounts now look ahead to the spring. While UVM is currently outside of a playoff position, their postseason fate is entirely in their hands. Of the eight games scheduled in January and February, six come against ranked opponents. UVM will take on #1 UMass-Amherst once (1/26), #8 Keene State twice (1/19, 2/9), #9 Holy Cross twice (2/3, 2/8) and #19 Marist once (1/25). The other two matchups will be played against unranked SNHU and UMaine.
The Catamounts return to action on Saturday, 1/19 at 8:00 PM when they host the Keene State College Owls. The following day, UVM will entertain the SNHU Penmen at 2:00 PM. Admission to UVM ACHA Men's Hockey games is always free.
