Weekend Recap: Valley Blue Sox Move to 9-5 on the 2021 Season after Week 3
By Emma Needham
The Valley Blue Sox took home two wins and two losses to conclude the third weekend of play in the 2021 season.
The two home games saw exciting wins from the Blue Sox, and they dropped both away games on Saturday and Monday.
On Friday, June 18th, Valley faced the Danbury Westerners in a nail-biter. The game was the first in the 2021 season to go into extra innings, as at the end of 9 innings, the score was tied at 5-5. Danbury scored a run in the top of the tenth, bringing the score to 6-5, but Nate Thomas (St. Josephs) came through with a bomb to right field, bringing two runners home and securing a 7-6 win.
Saturday was on the road to Fitch High to face the Mystic Schooners. The Blue Sox fell 6-5 at the end of the game, after the Schooners grabbed a 5-0 lead in the fifth inning, Valley made a great attempt to comeback, but came up short after a bases loaded walk from the Mystic pitcher to end the game.
Sunday brought the second win of the weekend for the Blue Sox, who came back from behind in what seems to be their signature way of doing things. The Blues, who have been surfing at the bottom of the Southern Division standings, scored fast runs in the top of the first to set the pace for the game. However, Catcher Cole Andrews (Miami/Ohio) walked it off for Valley off of a two-run double in the ninth inning to win the game.
Monday wrapped up the weekend for Valley, where they dropped a high-scoring game to the Newport Gulls. The score was first moved by Nate Thomas (St Joseph’s) in a solo home run in the top of the third inning, giving the Blue Sox a 1-0 lead. The Gulls went on a scoring tear, leading 9-4 in the bottom of the fifth. The teams went back and forth before finalizing the score at 12-10 in favor of the Gulls.
