By: David Azer
The Valley Blue Sox were defeated in their season opener by the North Adams SteepleCats by a score of 6-4. Dominick Marcoccio got the start for the SteepleCats, who pitched 4.2 innings allowing only one run.
Ben Roberts was the Opening Day starter for the Blue Sox, who went 2.2 innings. The Blue Sox struggled on the defensive side in the early going, but were able to bounce back as Right Fielder E.J Kreutzmann made a diving play to save a hit in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Blue Sox allowed 9 walks in this game and will hope to minimize traffic on the base paths as the season continues.
Center Fielder Will Gale reached on an error in the top of the first inning and recorded the first stolen base for the Blue Sox this season. Gale also recorded a ground rule double in the top of the third.
E.J Kreutzmann had a great night at the plate, with a single and an RBI triple for the Blue Sox. The San Diego native will look to keep his momentum going at the plate as the team returns home for four games this weekend.
The Blue Sox put up some runs in the later half of this game, making it a tight ball game as the later innings approached, but could not rally in the top of the ninth after Jeff Pierantoni’s leadoff walk. David Lally Jr. recorded a nine out save for the SteepleCats for their first win of the young season.
The Blue Sox will look to bounce back tomorrow night with their first home game of the season tomorrow night vs. the Bristol Blues at 6:35 P.M.
