Valley Defeated by League-Leading Newport 8-1
By: David Azer
The Valley Blue Sox were defeated by the Newport Gulls by a score of 8-1. The team fell to 8-4 on the season.
Newport showed why they are first place in the league tonight, with their starter Jake Hunter pitching 5.2 no-hit innings while striking out nine batters. The Gulls tallied 11 hits on the night.
Nick Callano started the game for Valley, and struck out three batters through 5.1 innings, allowing four runs in the effort. The Blue Sox also had three errors in the field tonight and will hope to limit the mental mistakes next time out.
The bright spot for the Blue Sox came in the seventh and eighth innings, when two-way-player Cian Sahler made his first appearance on the mound this season. Sahler produced two no-hit innings, while striking out four batters. The Outfielder looked like a natural on the mound tonight, even though he hadn’t pitched in over a year.
The Blue Sox offense was limited to five hits on the night. Two of these hits came from Left Fielder AJ Guerrero, who raised his average to .286 after joining the team last weekend. The lone run came in the bottom of the ninth inning after a bases-loaded walk from Catcher Efrain Correa Jr.
Third Baseman Drew Metzdorf made his team debut and had a solid night at the plate, batting 1-for-3 and adding a walk. The UMass Boston product also stole two bases on the night.
Valley will look to move past this game quickly, as they prepare to take on the North Adams SteepleCats on the road on Friday June 23rd at 6:30 P.M.
