Victoria Eagles infielder Sam Shaw, 18, has been invited to the MLB Draft Combine held at Chase Field in
Phoenix on June 20-25. The left-handed hitting Shaw is the first Victoria player and the first Canadian
position player to attend this prestigious event, joining a select group of Canadians who have been
evaluated as a “Top 300” prospect by MLB scouts. Since the event started in 2021, BC pitchers Jacob
Zibin (Langley Blaze, Cleveland Guardians) and Adam Maier (North Shore Twins, Atlanta Braves) have
attended the showcase. Two other Canadian pitchers, Adam Shoemaker (Atlanta Braves) and Matthew
Grabbman (NCAA D1 University of Oregon) round up the list of Canadian invitees.
The high school, junior college, NCAA, and NAIA players invited to the MLB Combine are given a unique
opportunity in front of MLB scouts to showcase their skills in pro style workouts to boost their stock in
the upcoming MLB draft this June. The players also undergo physical and medical assessments and will
meet the scouts, former players, and executives representing all 30 MLB teams. The Draft Combine will
be broadcast live on MLB TV.
Shaw is currently playing for the TNXL Academy in Orlando, Florida and will be returning to Victoria later
in May to play with his Eagles teammates for the rest of the team’s BCPBL season.
