WATERLOO PUMPS 60 SHOTS AT CAMBRIDGE NETMINDERS SUNDAY ON WAY TO AN 8-2 VICTORY AT HOME AGAINST THE REDHAWKS
Dec 16, 2018
Waterloo Siskins came into Sunday’s tilt at home against Cambridge with two things top of mind. One, Waterloo is in a four way dog fight for top billing in the conference. Two, Cambridge had won both sides of a home and home series with Waterloo a few weeks prior. Motivation to be prepared was not going to be hard to find for Waterloo Sunday.
The first period saw Cambridge strike first when recently sign Phil Caron scored a power play goal at 8:45 of the first period. This would be the only time Waterloo would trail in the game. CURTIS RAWN and OWEN LANE responded for Waterloo later in the frame before Cambridge tied the game before the end of the period.
Waterloo outshot Cambridge 25-13 in the opening frame but went into the room tied.
Waterloo continued to dominate in the second period. CHRISTIAN TAYLOR scored what would end up being the game winner at 5:03 of the second period. The game really opened up in the second period with good scoring chances at both ends. Siskins 16 year old Waterloo native MATT ONUSKA was called on to make several tough saves to keep the damage at two goals (See Photo #1 of Dec 16, 2018 Album). SAM SPAEDT and BLAKE PETTERLE also scored in the second frame leaving Waterloo up 5-2 after two.
The third period continued to be all Waterloo. ALEX LYCETT recovered his own rebound on a nice feed from line mate SAM SPAEDT pulling the puck around the Cambridge net minder (See Photo #2 of Dec 16, 2018 Album). ONUSKA got a little help from his friends at times when Cambridge was pressing. Waterloo new comer MICHAEL KEATING shored up the Waterloo back end and made some nice defensive plays in support of his young goaltender (See Photo #3 of Dec 16, 2018 Album).
Waterloo’s BENSON HAYES rounded out the scoring with two markers leaving the final score Waterloo 8 and Cambridge 2.
Saturday night had Waterloo visit the Brantford 99ers who were fresh off a 4-1 victory over Stratford the night before. Waterloo opened the scoring with goals by MATT PRUCHA and JEFF SCHRATTNER in the first 6 minutes. Penalty trouble continues to plague Waterloo and Curtis Anderson scored on a “seeing eyed” point shot that went off Waterloo defensemen ALEX CIMINO inadvertently past net minder MACHUS TURNER. JOSEPH SERPA scored what ended up as the game winner 2:15 into the second period making the score 3-1. Curtis Anderson scored another Brantford power play marker, his second of the game, getting Brantford close.
Brantford had two 5-3 power play chances in the third period however any coaches best penalty killer is their goalie and Waterloo’s MACHUS TURNER made some big saves to hold the lead.
In the end, Waterloo prevailed; scoring two empty net goals on their way to a 5-2 victory.
This weekend will be a big test for Waterloo when they visit the Stratford Warriors on Friday, the Kitchener Dutchmen on Saturday and end the year with a home game against the Elmira Sugar Kings on Sunday afternoon at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex for a 1:30 puck drop. We hope to see you there!!
