The Waterloo Siskins need at least a win and some help this weekend to secure home-ice advantage in the first round of the GOJHL Midwestern Conference playoffs.
The Listowel Cyclones and Kitchener Dutchmen leapfrogged fifth-place Waterloo (26-18-5) into third and fourth place respectively after the Siskins were edged 4-3 in a shootout Friday at Caledonia and 3-2 against visiting Cambridge Sunday at Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.
The Siskins trailed 3-0 against the second-place Winter Hawks Sunday before Ryan Doucette and Matt Cruickshank replied late in the second and third periods to make a game of it.
P.J. Bridges stopped 30 shots, but was one-upped by Cambridge netminder Jordan Lee, who turned aside 38 Siskin attempts.
It was the opposite scenario Friday at the Haldimand Centre in Caledonia as the Siskins jumped ahead 3-0 on goals by Doucette, Jakub Jelen and Danny Hanlon before the first-place Corvairs replied with three straight goals of their own to force overtime.
Adam Brady and Connor Murphy scored for Caledonia in the shootout. Evan Buehler and Stephen Witiuk were both stopped by Justis Husak, who made 23 saves in regulation and overtime.
Bridges made 31 saves before the shootout.
The Siskins close out the regular season Saturday and Sunday at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex against the Stratford Cullitons at 7:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. respectively.
Stratford (25-17-6) is one point back of Waterloo for fifth in the conference. Third-place Listowel (28-18-3) is two points up on the Siskins
