Weekend Review 9/14-9/16: Different Fortunes for Wisconsin and NDSU in Non-Conference Openers
Wisconsin got their season started as planned with two wins over an in-state opponent, but North Dakota State lost their opening two games against a new, yet strong, challenger.
NON-CONFERENCE
Opening on Friday night in Oshkosh, the University of Wisconsin was challenged over the course of their first outing of the season. UW-Oshkosh took the lead twice in the first two periods, but the Badgers struck back both times to pull even before taking the lead late in the second. UW would then add an insurance goal in the third, and although the Titans drew back within one, the Badgers saw out the victory 4-3 to get their first win [BOX SCORE]. The second W came the next night in Madison in a one-sided contest. Wisconsin skated to a quick 4-0 lead in the first, growing it to 6-0 in the second before UWO finally ended the shutout bid. The Badgers would see out the third with an additional goal to take game 2, and the series sweep, with a score of 7-1.
The wins moved Wisconsin to 2-0-0 on the season; the Badgers return to the ice on Friday in another in-state series against Marian University.
On Saturday, North Dakota State University travelled west to face the University of Mary, who hosted NDSU in their first ever series as a program. For the hosts, the opening game could not have gone better. After breaking through midway through the first period, the Mauraders used the energy of an impressive capacity crowd to pummel the Bison for the remainder, eventually skating away with an 8-0 victory. On Sunday, North Dakota State returned with renewed energy and struck first in the game to carry a 1-0 lead into the second. However, the hosts found thier footing and tallied two in the second for a one goal lead heading into the third. U. of Mary would strike again to grow the lead to 3-1, but the Bison responded to put the game on edge at 3-2. With the goalie pulled in search of the equalizer, the Marauders capitalized on a turnover to finish off the game with an empty net tally and a 4-2 win.
With two loses, NDSU starts the young season at 0-2-0. The Bison are back in action on Friday night as they welcome Winona State in Fargo for a pair of games.
