San Diego State clinches playoff spot
ARTESIA, Calif.- San Diego State swept their two game conference slate this past weekend and in doing so became the first team to clinch a playoff spot.
On Friday night the Aztecs dominated Cal State Fullerton 9-1. Isaac Miller and Anthony Mata put SDSU up a pair before Bailey Mejia scored the only goal for CSUF. Tommy Lisac made it 3-1 after the first period.
Mata, Josh Nobida and Tristan Macalolooy increased the lead to 6-1 after two.
Hayden Bolls, Patrick Miller and Adrien Wisch capped things off in the third period.
The Aztecs officially clinched a playoff spot when Cal State Northridge beat Chapman that same night 15-0.
SIMI VALLEY, Calif.- Cal State Northridge dismantled Chapman last Friday night 15-0.
Freshman goalie Caleb Mead earned a five save shutout in his first career start. Mead only saw two shots in the first period, one in the second and two more in the third.
The Matadors were led on offense by Eli Berengut who scored four goals. Berengut scored the first two goals for CSUN 5:30 into the game. Quentin Abaya, Tommy Pang and Alex Reints made it 5-0 after the opening 20 minutes.
John Michael Laurin made it 6-0 at 13:59 of the second. Then Berengut scored back-to-back goals again to earn a hat trick. Laurin scored his second of the period to make it 9-0.
Cameron Rorick increased the lead to 10-0 at 12:31 of the third. Matt Bushton, Matt Hoover, Bushton, Abaya and George Reznikov finished the scoring for CSUN.
The Matadors need just one more point to clinch a playoff spot after Chapman lost to San Diego State the next night.
HARBOR CITY, Calif.- Long Beach State pulled away from Loyola Marymount in the second half of the game Friday to earn a big conference victory 8-2.
Eric Johnson opened the scoring for LMU at 18:20 of the first period. Kody Ichinaga struck back for Long Beach at 13:23. Then Blake Sundy made sure the 49ers were ahead heading into the dressing rooms at 3:11.
Johnson potted his second of the game at 11:01 to tie the game at two. But that's when Long Beach took over the game. Francis Lemay gave Long Beach their second lead just two minutes later. Matt Hoeksema made it 4-2 at 4:22.
Adam Stanovich, Luke Miller, Joe Toews and Blake Rivera capped off a big third period for the 49ers.
The win moved Long Beach into sole possession of third place in the standings.
ANAHEIM, Calif.- Once again San Diego State's offense was just too much Saturday and the Aztecs dominated Chapman 12-2.
Aaron Mayer and Isaac Miller opened the scoring in the first period.
Anthony Mata, Mayer and Tyler Smith made it 5-0 SDSU before Alex Muse got Chapman into the game. Isaac Miller and Tommy Lisac struck back for SDSU to make it 7-1.
Tristan Macalolooy made it 8-1 at 13:30 of the third. Just 18 seconds later Jack Dobbins increased the lead. Dobbins picked up another goal at 9:23 to make it 10-1. Mata then Dobbins for the hat trick gave the Aztecs a 12-1 lead. Jake Ingrassia scored the final goal of the game for the Panthers.
The win ensured San Diego can finish no lower than second place at the end of the regular season.
