First half wrap-up
The first half of the WCHC season has come to a close with Loyola Marymount still in first place.
The Lions are the only team that has officially clinched a playoff spot and sport a 10-2 record with their only two losses coming against Cal State Northridge. The Matadors swept LMU in a home-and-home weekend series Nov. 2-3 5-0 and 7-0. But the Lions have been perfect the rest of the season including a sweep of the current second place team Long Beach State. LMU beat the 49ers back on Sept. 28 5-3 and completed the sweep in dramatic fashion Dec. 1 winning the only overtime game of the season so far 3-2.
LMU has played 12 of their 14 conference games which is the most, along with the University of San Diego, of anyone. So there are plenty of games left for several teams to try and catch the Lions.
Taking a look at each teams current maximum number of points possible this season CSUN can earn 26 so if they win out the Matadors will clinch the number one seed for the playoffs. CSUN has a 6-1 record with their only blemish coming against Long Beach on Oct. 27 4-3. Long Beach has the next highest number at 25. LMU is tied with UC Santa Barbara with 24. UC San Diego can earn 20 points while Cal State Fullerton can earn 18. Lastly Chapman can earn 14 and San Diego can get to six.
San Diego is the only team that has been officially eliminated from the playoffs because the best they can do is tie UCSD with six points. However UCSD has earned the tie breaker by sweeping the Toreros this season.
