WPU GETS WEEKEND SWEEP IN MARYLAND
The William Paterson ice hockey team headed south for a weekend trip to Maryland on November 1-3, 2019. After two losses last weekend, the team was looking to get back on track with Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association (ECHA) matchups at Navy and Towson.
The Pioneers were looking to avenge a 3-2 loss six days earlier as they took the ice at McMullen Arena in Annapolis, MD. The team skated well in the first 20 minutes and got goals from Cole Skelly (Landing, NJ) and Tommy Bauer (Fords, NJ) to open up a 2-1 lead. The second period was more of the same as the Pioneers opened up a 4-1 lead off goals from Bauer and Zach Thompson (Anchorage, AK). However, the Midshipmen would not surrender and fought back to tie the game at 5-5 late in the 3rd period. After a scoreless 5 minute overtime, the teams headed to a shootout. Cole Mulholland (Pompton Lakes, NJ) added to his great performance with 4 shootout saves and Alex Cavaluzzo (Lake Hiawatha, NJ) provided the heroics with a shootout winner!
After an off day on Saturday, the Pioneers headed to Abingdon, MD to take on the Towson University Tigers on Sunday, November 3. The team got on the board early with Adam Marvin (New City, NY) scoring on a breakaway. Brett Connon (Westwood, NJ) made the score 2-0, as he rushed the puck out of the defensive zone and then fired a shot that beat the Towson goalie. Sean Murray (Rockaway, NJ) converted two goals on breakaways and it was all Pioneers in this one. Jeremy Hamerquist (Woodland Park, CO) made all 38 saves to get the win and first shutout of the season.
Assistant Coach Kyle Garlasco on the weekend, "it was good to see the team respond after two, tough losses. It shows a lot about the group that we have here. Hopefully we can use the momentum gained from the weekend and utilize it moving forward."
The Pioneers are back on the road next Saturday 11/9 vs West Chester. Game time is 7pm at Ice Line in West Chester, PA.
