ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
Challenging programs, small classes, and personal attention from caring faculty sets East Carolina University apart from other institutions of our size. With more than 100 undergraduate degree programs from which to choose, a degree from ECU allows you to combine the essential skills of a liberal arts education with outstanding professional preparation.
ECU is located in the eastern part of North Carolina in Greenville, which is about 80 miles east of the State capital of Raleigh, and 80 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean. With a population of more than 80,000, Greenville is the business, cultural, educational, and medical hub in Eastern North Carolina. The city is accessible by highway and by airports in Greenville, Kinston, New Bern, and Raleigh.
With an enrollment of 28,962 students, ECU is the fastest-growing campus in the University of North Carolina system and the third-largest university in North Carolina. Additionally, it was ranked one of the “Best Value Colleges” by The Princeton Review in 2008 and is home to the Brody School of Medicine, which was ranked 17th in the country for primary care physician preparation, 2nd in sending grads into Family Medicine, and 6th in the rural medicine specialty in the 2009 edition of U.S. News & World Report.
TUITION & FEES
The cost of higher education can seem intimidating, and paying for it an even more daunting task, yet East Carolina University continues to be a great value. Attending ECU as an out-of-state student is often times more affordable than paying in-state tuition at other universities throughout the country, while the in-state tuition rate at ECU is one the lowest in the state of North Carolina. LEAGUE AFFILIATION
The ECU Ice Hockey Club is a proud member of the College Hockey Federation (CHF) and compete out of the Atlantic Coast Collegiate Hockey League (ACCHL) in the Division III level. Teams included in ECU's division, the Upper South, include Coastal Carolina (SC), College of Charleston (SC), High Point (NC) and Liberty (VA).
LOCKER ROOM
The ECU Ice Hockey Club is proud to be able to provide our student-athletes with first class amenities off of the ice including a custom built locker room with 30 locker stalls (3 oversized stalls for goalies), an equipment table and dehumidifier. Players have access to the locker room throughout the season and have the luxury of being able to leave their equipment in the locker room for the entirety of the season. A permanent locker room is a rarity among ACHA/CHF programs and ECU is proud to be one of the few clubs to be able to offer one to our players.
TRYOUTS
Tryouts are open to any enrolled student at ECU and are held prior to the beginning of each season and are highly competitive. Typical attendance is between 40-50 players. Tryout fees are $50. No players are guaranteed a roster spot, including returning players. Tryouts typically run for 2-3 nights each season.
PRACTICES
The Pirates hold one (1) hour on-ice practices two days a week during the season which are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Players have full access to the Student Recreation Center where off-ice strength and conditioning practices are held. Practice schedules are provided to all players at the first team meeting shortly after tryouts. Transportation for practices and games for players living on-campus can be arranged.
2020-2021 practices ran from 8:30-9:45 PM for reference.
GAME DAY
The Pirates typically play a 20-25 game season, not including post-season play. All games, with the exception of the Regional and National Tournaments, showcase tournaments and league playoffs, are scheduled on weekends as to minimize the amount of school missed by players. All home games and practices are held at Carolina Ice Zone, located just two miles from campus. For away games, the team travels in university provided vans or charter buses and sometimes players will commute themselves to specific trips.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS & CODE OF CONDUCT
The CHF requires all undergraduate student-athletes to maintain a 2.0 GPA while also being enrolled in, and passing, a minimum of nine credit hours per semester. Graduate students need only to be enrolled in and pass six credit hours, while also maintaining a 2.0 GPA. While the CHF only requires a 2.0 GPA, the ECU Ice Hockey Club holds our student-athletes to a higher standard and requires a minimum 2.2 GPA. Rostered players are also required to read and sign an ECU Ice Hockey Club Student-Athlete Code of Conduct contract. This contract details the expectations of the coaching and administrative staff of both the ECU Ice Hockey Club and the University regarding the manner in which our players conduct themselves both on and off the ice.
PLAYER DUES
As the university provides the team with limited funding, each player must pay dues per season. Dues are $1,200 per season but can fluctuate depending on the financial need of the club. Players are strongly encouraged to seek sponsorships which may help to reduce or alleviate that individual’s dues. Season dues can either be paid per semester or in full at the beginning of the season. In certain cases a payment plan can also be arranged. Fees will not be pro-rated, players accept team invitations understanding it is the coaching staff's prerogative to determine playing time for each individual player.
EQUIPMENT
First year players must also make a one-time equipment fee payment of $300, paid in full prior to the first game of the season, which will cover the costs of the following items:
- Game Jerseys
- Game Socks
- Practice Jerseys
- Practice Socks
- Equipment Bags
- Warm-up Suits
- Team Apparel
- Pant Shells
- Helmet Decals
All players must have a black helmet prior to the first game of the season
COMMUNITY INVOLVMENT
The East Carolina University Ice Hockey Club is committed to giving back to the community that provides the team with so much support every year. From canned food drives to supporting breast cancer awareness and literacy programs throughout Pitt County and Eastern North Carolina. ECU Ice Hockey works hard to remain a permanent fixture in the Greenville community. As part of being a Pirate, all players are expected to attend any and all community involvement functions that may be arranged throughout the season.
