BILL DOUGHERTY MEMORIAL AWARD
Established in 1990, this annual award is given to one player from
each level (Varsity, JV) for the DEDICATION, DISCIPLINE, and DESIRE
displayed during past hockey season.
The award replicates an award given to Bill Dougherty in his
Senior Year (1987). Bill played Varsity hockey for O’Hara in his Junior
and Senior years. About 18 months after his graduation, his life was
taken suddenly in a car accident in December of 1988. Some caring
and thoughtful friends within the Hockey Club and Faculty at O’Hara
believed this charismatic young man should be remembered in a
special way and established the memorial award, effective at the end
of the 1990 - 1991 season. The award has been given every year since,
and with over 75 winners in the past 22 years.
The award is somewhat unique in that it is given for observed
personal qualities, while not excluding hockey skills. Over the years
several winners of this award have returned to assume coaching
positions within the O’Hara Ice Hockey Club (attesting to their
personal qualities and hockey skills). * Indicates mutiple year winner.
