Victoria Jr. Mariners

Victoria Mariners (BCPBL/BCJPBL/BCPBLPrep) Season Registration

Welcome to Victoria Mariners Baseball!

Thank you for making the commitment to play baseball with the Victoria Mariners Baseball Club!

Our organization has a rich history of succes in the BC Premier Baseball League. We have players who have represented our provincial and national teams, and we have enjoyed success at tournaments in the U.S. Our seasons in the PBL are filled with games against the best teams in the province, tournaments, and plenty of practice time on the field. With the introduction of the Victoria Mariners Bantam Premier or "Prep" Team this Fall 2015, there are more opportunities than ever to be part of an elite organization of baseball players who wish to play at the highest possible level in British Columbia. Our philosophy is centred around development and recruitment of players, and readying them for the next level - be it in the PBL, at college, or in the MLB!

Our seasons begin in April and finish with provincials in August. The Premier Mariners played 44 BCPBL games this past season as well as attending two tournaments. The Junior Premier team can expect a similar season with slightly fewer games as there are fewer teams in the BCJPBL. Bantam Premier teams are still in the early stages, therefore the schedule is not yet finalized.

Assessments are already underway throughout the Fall Ball season, and will also take place during our indoor training sessions for Junior Premier and Bantam Premier at Oak Bay Recreation Centre through October and November. Team selection will be made by November 1, 2015 while indoors are in progress. Indoor training session schedules are posted HERE.  Premier Mariners will begin indoor training sessions in January of 2016.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not see your question below, please feel free to CONTACT US here...

1. What are the player fees used for?

Fees are used for many expenditures throughout the season. Here is a list of a number of items:  player and coach travel (ferry,  hotel, and coach per diems), game equipment, field maintenance and equipment, field rental costs, umpire fees, coaching salaries (if you wish to have a detailed list please contact the LVIBA Treasurer).

2. Do the fees I pay cover the cost of the whole season?

Unfortunately, no. As per question 1, a portion of player fees goes toward other costs incurred throughout each season as well as maintenance and equipment. Travel costs increase every year, as well fluctuation in the U.S. exchange rate when we travel to the U.S.  Every year, we try as best we can to estimate what these costs will be. The fact is the fees fall short of these costs. The good news is there are ways teams can raise the remaining funds required. In the past, our teams have held car washes, bottle drives, garage sales, scrap metal drives, and beer and burger nights and had enormous success! Fundraisers are great team building and family bonding experiences - and it allows players to contribute financially to their season.

3. Why do we pay coaches?

All teams in the PBL pay coaches. At this level of baseball, it is not desirable to use volunteer parent coaches because we want to provide coaching and training from coaches who have years of experience playing, coaching, recruiting, and mentoring ballplayers. Mariners coaches all have careers and full-time jobs outside of baseball, so coaching is done in what little time they have outside of work. Our coaches receive a small salary in exchange for the countless hours they spend preparing, coaching, attending meetings and training sessions, communicating and working behind the scenes. We also do have a number coaches who give their time without compensation, therefore we are offering a great experience for a minimal cost.

4. Are there any other ways to help pay for fees?

The Victoria Mariners produce a media guide every year that is loaded with advertising by local businesses. Players and families get a portion of the cost of any ads that they have canvassed businesses for. These amounts go toward their player's fees exclusively. In the past, we have had families who have paid for their entire season through media guide ads! Watch for this information at the first parent meeting of the season after team selection (2015 Media Guide)
