Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week (October 9, 2010)

Thea Imbrogno, Robert Morris

Freshman, Forward, Etobicoke, Ontario

Imbrogno started the season with a flurry, assisting on the Colonials’ first two goals of the season with both helpers coming on goals that tied the game. With Robert Morris and Providence tied, 2-2, in the waning seconds of the second period, Imbrogno broke free down the right side and put one past the goalie to give RMU its first lead of the game—and a lead which it would not relinquish. Imbrogno picked up an assist in RMU’s second game Saturday and finished the weekend with four points on a goal and three assists. She fired seven shots on the weekend.

2009 /2010 Jr. Chiefs Win Prestigious Stoney Creek Showcase Tournament

The Junior Chiefs being one of forty teams from Canada and the United States to compete in the 6th Annual Stoney Creek University Showcase Tournament took home the gold medal on September 20th.

The Mississauga Junior Chiefs play in the Intermediate AA Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) and won all seven of their tournament games and outscored their opposition 30-5 to capture the Showcase Championship. The gold medal game against league rival Toronto Junior Aeros was a hard played and exciting game that was decided in a three-player shoot-out after over-time failed to break a 1-1 tie.

This was the second time in three years that the Junior Chiefs have won this Showcase Tournament and the team’s success can be attributed to the five year program that Head Coach Jerry Turi and assistant coaches Dave Richards, Trevor MacIsaac, and Chris Chliszczyk have developed for the Junior Chiefs. Coach Turi commented after the Championship game that his players came together as a cohesive unit for this tournament and he was pleased with their participation in this series of victories.

This Stoney Creek University Showcase Tournament allows young female hockey players (21 and under) to showcase their capabilities to a wide audience of scouts from Canadian and US universities. For this 6th Annual Tournament 110 coaches representing 64 Canadian and US universities were in attendance and they were not disappointed by the early season performance of the participating teams.

The Junior Chiefs team members are: Sarah Edney, Nicole Kosta, Amber Broker, Kristen Richards, Nicole Gifford, Danielle Gagne, Jessica Hoyle, Jenna Pitts, Alexandra Cieslowski, Emily Pfalzer, Sofia Troop, Jessalyn Bogacki, Olivia Ross, Jenna Dingeldein, Thea Imbrogno, Margot Scharfe, Gina Repaci, Nevine Healey (Manager), Maria Gallo (Trainer), Amy Stefaniuk (Trainer).

2008/09 Jr. Chiefs Win Provincial Gold

The Mississauga Jr. Chiefs continued their winning ways bringing home the Gold at the Provincial Championships. The Chiefs came into the weekend sporting 2 gold medals and 3 silvers from tournament play and continue to battle for first place in the P.W.H.L.

The final pitted the Jr. Chiefs against 2 time defending Provincial Champions Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres. Stoney Creek started fast scoring twice in the first five minutes and held that lead late into the third period when a powerplay goal by the Chiefs got them back into the game. Moments later the Chiefs scored the tying goal sending their fans into a frenzy.  With their supporters chanting “Let’s Go Chiefs”  they continued to pressure the Sabres eventually drawing a penalty. The Chiefs were able to capitalize on the powerplay scoring the go-ahead goal with just under two minutes to go then hung on for the 3 – 2 win.

The Chiefs motto of “Never Back Down” was never more evident than in this championship game.
