Double Play

Jorge Roque (Lamar, Texas Southern, St. Louis Cardinals)

For Coach Jorge Roque developing athletes into scholar athletes is a passion. Baseball has been a part of his family for generations. Jorge’s father Jorge Roque and Uncle Otoniel Velez both played in the Major Leagues and were both inducted into the Hall of Fame in Puerto Rico. His Godfather Felix Maldonado was a part of the Boston Red Sox organization for over 50 years as a player, scout and director of player development in Latin America. Before his passing he was honored by having a baseball park named after him in the Red Sox spring training facility. He was also inducted into the Hall of Fame in Puerto Rico.

Following his baseball roots, Jorge developed a passion for the sport and was awarded collegiate scholarships to both Texas Southern University and Lamar University. After college Jorge went on to play in the National Baseball circuit in Puerto Rico (Double A). That same year he was named Rookie of the Year and was invited to play with the National Team, but was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals where he competed and eventually ended his playing career.

Coach Roque has a similar outlook and mission in developing athletes and helping them to maximize their potential with baseball through their collegiate career.  Jorge is working actively with the RSABL and his own personally founded Rising Star Athletics Inc. to facilitate his own “Double Play” youth program to offer developmental baseball for youth to help potential prospects work through high school into possible college scholarship and to help ensure they stay on track to achieve these goals.
