About Us

In  1991,  the  WVU  Division  II  Hockey  team  was  formed  as  a  second  team  under  the  established  Division  I  program  to  accommodate  the  growing  number  of  hockey  playing  students  at  the  university  that  wanted  to  continue  playing  at  the  American  College  Hockey  Association  (ACHA)  level.  The  team  eventually  found  a  league  home  in  the  Tri-‐State  Collegiate  Hockey  League  (TSCHL)  in  which  the  team  became  a  fixture  for  many  years  with  varied  levels  of  success  and  a  growing  need  for  a  more  established  business  and  recruiting  structure.  Inevitably,  the  club  outgrew  its  humble  beginnings  and  sought  to  upgrade  its  status.

  A  new  era  dawns

In  April  of  2014,  the  Division  II  team  was  granted  its  own  club  sports  status  within  the  WVU  Club  Sports  organization.  With  this  historic  event,  a  new  and  exciting  era  of  hockey  in  Morgantown  was  ushered  in.  A  new  coaching  staff,  a  new  business  and  recruiting  structure  was  developed  and  the  team  embarked  on  a  new  and  exciting  course  with  a  young  and  hungry  nucleus  of  talent.

  A  new  identity

Seeking  the  formation  of  a  strong  and  unified  force  for  all  its  club  members,  the  club  made  one  of  the  boldest  moves  in  the  long  history  of  college  hockey  in  Morgantown  and  was  voted  into  the  College  Hockey  East  starting  league  play  in  the  2015-‐16  season. This  bold  and  exciting  move  allows  for  more  budgetary  benefits  to  its  members,  as  well  as  the  prestige  of  playing  in  one  of  the  oldest  and  most  respected  leagues  in  the  country at the D3 level. In addition, the team will compete in the NCHA beginning in the 2016-17 season. It  allows  for  a  better  national  and  regional  footprint  which  will  boost  recruiting  and  the  overall  experience  of  the  club  members.  With  the  moves,  the  club  required  a  new  identity  which  became  The  West  Virginia  University  Hockey  Club  (WVUHC). The club emphasizes the holistic development of the mind as well as the physical skills involved in the sport of hockey.  While the sport is captivating and fast paced, the club's focus remains on the academic and professional progression of its student-athletes.
This nonprofit organization seeks to promote the game of hockey, not just within the boundaries of the WVU campus, but to broaden the participation and involvement with the sport statewide.  It recognizes the responsibility of the University and its representatives to become leaders in the community.  The WVU Hockey Club has developed the necessary structure and core set of values that will allow for community and statewide development.  Come out and see a game to support us and be a part of the growing hockey culture in Morgantown!
