Martha's Vineyard fall to Blues in 5-3 upset
The NECBL Southern Division leaders Martha’s Vineyard Sharks were defeated by the Blues in an enthralling game on Saturday night.
The Blues came into this one off the back of a stunning victory versus the Mystic Schooners on Friday night.
After a wild pitch and a couple of errors the Sharks quickly found themselves ahead in the first inning. Apart from this, the early stages of the game were quiet.
The game began to change in the bottom of the fifth inning after back to back doubles from Brock Murtha and then Brennen Dorighi saw the Blues get one back and tie the game 1-1.
Similarly to Friday night, the seventh inning proved to be the best from the Blues. Skylar Messinger led off and found himself with a full count. After fouling a pitch off, Messinger swung on an outside pitch and drove the ball over the right field fence, putting his team up 2-1.
Chad Knight got on base through an error and Brock Murtha singled for his second hit of the game. Tyler Keith then came to the plate and blasted a double into the outfield, driving in two runs in the process.
Following a Chris Davis single and an error, Keith scored the fourth run of the inning as Bristol headed to the eighth inning with a four run lead.
Justin Humenay took the mound in the top of the ninth, replacing winning pitcher Jacob Moskowitz. The Quebec native struggled at the beginning of the inning, giving up two runs after having trouble finding the strike zone.
With runners on second and third and the go ahead run at the plate for the Sharks, Humenay struck out two batters in a row, showing cold composure.
Logan Stevens made an incredible diving catch in right field to end the game and the Blues won 5-3 in the end.
Next up, the Bristol squad travel to Massachusetts as they take on the Blue Sox on Father’s Day.
