Cincinnati hands Hamilton its first loss with 6-1 victory
The Cincinnati Steam (5-2) had three pitchers combine to two-hit the Hamilton Joes (7-1) in a 6-1 win at Max McLeary Field on Friday. The loss is Hamilton’s first of the season.
Starter Matt Jefferson earned the win. He stymied the Joes hitters through seven innings to the tune of one earned run allowed on two hits with seven strikeouts. Wynston McMartin followed with just one walk allowed in one inning. Jacob Bodner closed out the win with one strikeout in one frame.
The Steam offense combined for nine total hits with Brian Bien, Jake Richmond and Anthony Asalon knocking two base hits apiece. Richmond hit a home run with two RBI and two runs scored, and Bien also scored a run. Connor McVey and Derek Lance drove in a run each.
For the Joes, TJ Nichting drove in their only run. Starter Derrick Hamilton took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with three strikeouts. James Ward followed with 2.2 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits with two K’s, and Brian Jestice put up zeroes in 1/3 of an inning.
Cincy and Hamilton will go to Hamilton for a 7:05 p.m. game on Saturday and then return to Cincinnati for a 4 p.m. contest on Sunday.
