Southern Ohio tops Licking County 10-6 to stay in second
A seven-run second inning gave Southern Ohio (18-14) a lead it would not give up in a 10-6 win over Licking County (14-16) on Saturday at Don Edwards Field. The win keeps the Copperheads in second place in the standings, 3.5 games behind Lima and half of a game ahead of Cincinnati.
Southern Ohio had 14 hits. Bobby Indeglia led his team in the hits and RBI categories, going 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs. Justin Sherman finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI while Branden Boggetto had a pair of hits and RBI and a run scored. Dan Durkin contributed two hits, one run and an RBI, as did Jake Farr. Kyle Dean tacked on a hit, a run and an RBI.
Starter Walter Borkovich (1-2) got the win, giving up four runs, two earned, on nine hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out two. Jake Miller picked up his third save with a 2 1/3 inning performance that included two hits and one strikeout.
Licking County tallied a respectable 13 hits but just four RBI. Kolin McMillen and Justin Byrd each had three hits and a run scored. Byrd, Austin Garcia, Zak DeCamp and Zyke Bailey each drove in a run. DeCamp and Nick Paxton each had two hits.
Settlers starter Michael Stafford (1-2) took the loss, giving up seven runs, five earned, on four hits in 2 1/3 innings with four walks and no strikeouts. He was one of six pitchers to throw for Licking County, and only two did not allow a run.
Southern Ohio hosts Grand Lake on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. while Licking County is home against Lexington at 7:05 p.m. on Sunday at Don Edwards Field.
