Mariners Defeat Copperheads in Elimination Game

August 2, 2017
4:41 PM EDT

Last night the Grand Lake Mariners lived to see another day of baseball with their exciting 4-3 victory over the Southern Ohio Copperheads.  At one point trailing 3-1, the Mariners bounced back with a 3 run rally in the 6th inning to take a 4-3 lead, which they held all the way to the finish.  The Mariners’ starting pitcher was Tyler Magley from Ohio Dominican University, who allowed 2 earned runs in 6 innings pitched, picking up the win for the night.  Coming in for relief for the Mariners was Andrew Niksich from Illinois State University, who pitched 3 innings and only gave up 2 hits and 1 earned run.  The offensive star for the Mariners was Nic Varda of Ashland University, who went 3 for 3 and drove in 3 RBIs.  Next up on the Mariners’ schedule is a matchup with the Richmond Jazz in a 3 game series, which starts tonight at 7:05 P.M. at McBride Stadium in Richmond, Indiana.  Game 2 will be tomorrow night at Montgomery Field in Celina, Ohio.  Game 3 (if necessary) will be played back at McBride Stadium on Friday night.  The winner of this series will go on to play either the St. Clair Green Giants or the Lima Locos in another 3 game set to determine a league champion.
